Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Holland Park Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety policy explains how Gardeners Holland Park manages the safety and welfare of clients, members of the public, employees, subcontractors and visitors during all gardening and grounds maintenance work. Our aim is to prevent injury, protect health and promote safe working practices on every job we undertake.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Gardeners Holland Park is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment. We will identify and control foreseeable risks arising from our gardening and landscaping activities, and we will provide information, instruction, supervision and training to support safe conduct at work. Health and Safety is a core part of how we plan and deliver every service.
Management accepts overall responsibility for implementing this policy and for ensuring that sufficient resources are available to achieve high standards of safety. All staff and subcontractors are required to cooperate fully in carrying out this policy and to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Legal Compliance and Review
Our Health and Safety arrangements are designed to meet or exceed relevant legislation and industry guidance that applies to gardening, landscaping and related outdoor services. This policy is reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in law, best practice, new equipment or new working methods.
Responsibilities
Management is responsible for ensuring that risk assessments are carried out, safe systems of work are established and that staff receive appropriate training, tools and personal protective equipment. Supervisors are responsible for day to day implementation on site, checking that procedures are followed and that any incidents or near misses are reported and investigated.
Employees and subcontractors must follow all safety instructions, use protective equipment correctly, report hazards promptly and avoid any action that could compromise safety. Everyone working under the Gardeners Holland Park name must stop work if they believe conditions are unsafe and immediately inform a responsible person.
Risk Assessment and Planning
Before starting work, we assess the risks associated with the location and the tasks to be carried out. This includes, where relevant, uneven ground, slopes, vehicle movements, public access, overhead lines, confined spaces, water features and environmental conditions such as weather and visibility.
We plan methods of work to minimise risks, including the organisation of work areas, safe storage and use of tools and materials, and measures to protect clients, neighbours and passers by. Where significant risks are identified, specific method statements and control measures are put in place and communicated to everyone involved.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Holland Park ensures that staff and subcontractors are competent to perform the tasks assigned to them. Training may include tool and machinery operation, manual handling, working at height, safe use of pesticides and other substances, noise and vibration awareness, and emergency procedures.
New or inexperienced workers are supervised until they are able to work safely on their own. Refresher training is provided when equipment changes, when new hazards are identified or when procedures are updated.
Safe Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
All tools, machinery and vehicles used by Gardeners Holland Park are maintained in a safe condition in accordance with manufacturers instructions and relevant standards. Pre use checks are carried out before work starts, and any defective item is taken out of service until repaired or replaced.
Only trained and authorised personnel are allowed to operate powered equipment such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, blowers and shredders. Machine guards and safety features must never be removed or overridden. Fuel is stored, handled and transported safely, away from ignition sources, and refuelling is carried out in well ventilated areas with engines switched off.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn whenever required. Depending on the task, this may include safety boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, head protection and respiratory protection.
Staff are responsible for looking after their protective equipment, reporting defects and ensuring it is used correctly. Replacements are provided when equipment is damaged, worn or no longer effective.
Hazardous Substances and Chemicals
Where gardening work involves fertilisers, pesticides, fuels, solvents or other potentially hazardous substances, Gardeners Holland Park follows safe handling, storage and application procedures. Only trained and authorised personnel may use such products, and they must follow manufacturer instructions and any applicable regulations.
Substances are stored securely, clearly labelled and kept away from children, pets and wildlife. Measures are taken to prevent spills and contamination of soil, water and drainage systems. Any accidental release is contained and managed promptly, and affected areas are made safe.
Manual Handling and Physical Safety
Gardening and landscaping work can involve lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of injury, we assess manual handling tasks and use mechanical aids or team lifting where practical. Staff are trained in safe lifting techniques and are instructed not to exceed their physical capabilities.
Work is organised to minimise prolonged awkward postures and overreaching. Regular breaks are encouraged, especially during strenuous tasks or in hot or cold weather conditions.
Working at Height
When work at height is required, for example for tree work, hedge cutting or property access, Gardeners Holland Park uses suitable equipment such as approved ladders, platforms or other access systems. Ladders are inspected regularly and positioned on stable ground before use.
Staff working at height must follow specific procedures, including maintaining three points of contact on ladders where applicable, keeping tools secure and preventing objects from falling onto people below.
Protection of Clients and the Public
We take reasonable steps to ensure that clients, visitors and members of the public are protected from harm arising from our activities. Work areas are organised to separate machinery and vehicles from pedestrian routes wherever possible. Warning signs, barriers or temporary cordons may be used if there is a risk of contact with moving equipment, falling debris or other hazards.
Noise and dust are controlled as far as reasonably practicable. At the end of each visit, work areas are left tidy, with tools, waste and materials removed or stored safely.
Environmental and Site Conditions
Outdoor work must take account of weather, ground conditions and seasonal changes. Gardeners Holland Park monitors conditions such as heavy rain, high winds, ice, snow, heat or poor visibility and may adjust work methods, postpone tasks or leave a site temporarily if it is not safe to continue.
We aim to protect plants, soil structure and wildlife habitats while carrying out gardening tasks. Routes for machinery and vehicles are planned to prevent unnecessary damage to lawns, borders and surrounding areas.
Accidents, Incidents and First Aid
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management without delay. Incidents are recorded, investigated and used to improve procedures and prevent reoccurrence. First aid provisions suitable for gardening work are available, and staff know how to obtain medical assistance when needed.
Where an incident affects a client or member of the public, we provide clear information about what has occurred and the measures taken to address it.
Implementation and Monitoring
This Health and Safety policy is communicated to all staff and subcontractors working with Gardeners Holland Park. Compliance is monitored through site checks, equipment inspections, incident reviews and feedback from workers and clients.
By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, Gardeners Holland Park aims to maintain a safe, healthy and professional gardening service for every client and community we serve.
